Event Description:

The Young Lawyers Conference Children and the Law Commission and the Asian Pacific American Bar Association of Virginia (APABA-VA) present “Celebrating Asian Pacific American Heritage Month: Leaders and Careers in the Law,” which will take place on May 20, 2017 at the Fairfax Courthouse.  We invite all high school and college students interested in pursuing law school and legal careers to join us for this free event.

We are pleased to announce that Judge John M. Tran will be our keynote speaker. On April 4, 2013, the Virginia General Assembly elected Judge Tran to serve on the Circuit Court of Fairfax County. Prior to his appointment on the bench, Judge Tran shaped his trial experience as a state and federal prosecutor in Alexandria, Virginia and later as a litigation partner in Old Town Alexandria law firm of DiMuroGinsberg, P.C. The son of a South Vietnamese diplomat and an immigrant who found refuge in the United States, he spent his entire adult life in the Washington Metropolitan Area and proudly considers himself a Virginian.

In addition to our keynote, we will host two exciting panels. The first panel will consist of Asian-American members of the Virginia bar who will share their diverse experiences as lawyers and judges.  Young attendees will learn about different types of legal careers and areas of law they may want to pursue in the future.

Our second panel will consist of law school admissions deans. Come get a head start on your law school applications by meeting multiple admissions deans from Virginia and DC law schools. The law school deans will introduce our young attendees to their respective law schools and their admissions criteria.

The event will conclude with a tour of the courthouse and a meet and greet session with the law school deans.

We hope this event will inspire Virginia’s youth, particularly students of color, to explore careers in the law. This event is free of charge. Lunch will be served.
