Old Dominion Bar Association

    A Message From the President

It is my humble privilege to introduce myself as President of the Old Dominion Bar Association (“ODBA”).  To follow in the paths of Oliver Hill, Spottswood Robinson, Lavinia Fleming Poe, Samuel Tucker, and countless other legal titans is an honor beyond measure.

My goals as ODBA’s President are simple: Growth, Restoration, and Renaissance.  I am of the firm belief that we, as an organized body can do anything that we put our mind to. There is not a challenge we are incapable of meeting, nor a need we cannot fill.  As ODBA's President, my priorities are: (1) to double the number of attorneys within our ranks under 40 years of age; (2) update our bylaws; (3) establish a Young Lawyer’s Division of the ODBA, with the Division Chair serving on the ODBA Board; (4) establish a voluntary listserve for ODBA members to enhance the connective tissue between our members from the far flung corners of the Commonwealth and increase communication, collaboration, and referrals between our membership; (5) securing corporate discounts for ODBA members; and (6) partner with other statewide affinity bar associations in creating programming consistent with our organizational aims. I have already began to lay the groundwork for this, and look forward to working with the ODBA Board to bring these goals to life. We have some truly incredible things in store!  To that end, please be on the lookout for a survey to all current and former ODBA members as the Board seeks to gauge your input on how best to engage the membership. It is important that our organization create programming to meet our members’ needs.

The Old Dominion Bar Association is one of the premier African-American Bar Associations in the United States, filled with a rich history of activism, scholarship, and progress.  While we have made great strides, many of the issues that galvanized our founding members 84 years ago - struggles over civil rights, disenfranchisement, and criminal Justice - continue to be prominent issues for many African Americans today.  Our job is not done, the battle is not over, and our community needs us now more than ever.  This year, as we celebrate our 84th year of existence and gear up for our 85th Anniversary Celebration, we know what our organization will be even greater with YOU as a member.

We look forward to seeing you at our Annual Conference May 16-19th at the Holiday Inn & Suites North Beach in Virginia Beach, located at 3900 Atlantic Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451.  We have a number of great activities in store, as well as business to attend to, including electing the next slate of leaders for the ODBA!  To register for the Annual Meeting, please click here.

If you wish to reach me directly, please feel free to contact me at president@odbabar.com.  I look forward to working with you in continuing the dynasty of the one of the preeminent bar associations in our Commonwealth.

To the stars, and beyond!

Rex
